One of the most common calls Fitzgerald Plumbing gets late in the day ‘I bumped the meter with the mower and it is leaking’ OR ‘I just ran over the water meter and it is spraying water everywhere’ (and more often they are on Friday afternoons or just as a big storm is starting!)
Hunter Water owns the meter and will replace one that is leaking, has stopped, or has become hard to read, at no charge. But damage you cause is different: a meter or meter frame that has been run over, bumped or vandalised is the property owner’s responsibility, and needs a licensed plumber to repair the water service and fit a spacer on the frame. That is the job we do.
You can protect your above ground water meter by putting a low walled protective structure around the meter, eg. garden edging materials, pre-fabricated raised garden bed. This will protect the meter from being bumped.
Do not over plant if doing a garden bed, the meter needs to be accessible.
